Naghsh-e Jahan Square was built during the Safavid period as a prominent government architecture complex in Isfahan. Naghsh-e Jahan Square consists of four specific buildings، each of which has a separate function. The Sheikh Lotfollah building was the third monument built in the east of the square and in front of the Aali Qapo Palace. Changes in the body of this building and its adjacent buildings have made it difficult to understand its original function. In this paper، for the first time، every descriptive document remaining from the beginning of Sheikh Lotfollah’s construction has been examined. These include historical documents from the same time period as the construction of the building as well as documents written by people studying or teaching at Sheikh Lotfollah. Analysis of documents related to the use of the building revealed that the function of the Sheikh Lotfollah at the time of construction was to serve as a school. Due to its great size، this school had a large prayer hall. Later، due to the similarity of the prayer hall with a mosque and the destruction of the classrooms، Sheikh Lotfollah was called a mosque. On the other hand، the use of prayer and education in Sheikh lotfollah was complementary and the naming was based on its primary function.
